Remembering How Christ Is the Relevant Light at Christmas
Christ is the relevant light at Christmas, and He should be relevant to our lives every day of the year!
The Divine inserted Himself into humanity as a human baby. Jesus, this baby born in a manger, grew to be the acceptable sacrifice for sin, the Lamb of God. The baby, who grew to be a sinless man, made the way for all to enjoy a relationship with God.
The story of the first Christmas claims the greatest title ever given – The Good News. So on that spectacular night, the angel of the heavenly host heralded forth The Good News of Jesus Christ and His mission to save the world.
Behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”
Luke 2:9–12 NKJV
That glorious night God’s messengers announced His greatest work. On that night, God’s shepherds proclaimed His greatest purpose. That night Heaven’s choir celebrated the coming of the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ.
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”
Luke 2:13–14 NKJV
Christ is the light of the world!
There are many Scripture passages that can enlighten our minds even more as to The Light that came to earth.
Arise, shine, for your light has come,
Isaiah 60:1–3 ESV
and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
For behold, darkness shall cover the earth,
and thick darkness the peoples;
but the Lord will arise upon you,
and his glory will be seen upon you.
And nations shall come to your light,
and kings to the brightness of your rising.
The people who walked in darkness
Isaiah 9:2 ESV
have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,
on them has light shone.
The sun will no more be your light by day,
Isaiah 60:19 NIV
nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you,
for the Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your God will be your glory.
In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
John 1:4–5 NASB
“I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness.”
John 12:46 NASB
Christ is the relevant light that disperses the darkness.
So Jesus said to them, “For a little while longer the Light is among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; he who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes. While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of Light.”
John 12:35–36 NASB
For God, who said, “Let there be light in the darkness,” has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.
2 Corinthians 4:6–7 NLT
We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.
Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God.
2 Corinthians 4:4 NLT
Christ is the Light that exposes the truth.
And He was saying to them, “A lamp is not brought to be put under a basket, is it, or under a bed? Is it not brought to be put on the lampstand?
Mark 4:21–22 NASB
“For nothing is hidden, except to be revealed; nor has anything been secret, but that it would come to light.”
But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light.
For this reason it says,
“Awake, sleeper,
And arise from the dead,
And Christ will shine on you.”
Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise,
making the most of your time, because the days are evil.
So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
Many, Lord, are asking, “Who will bring us prosperity?”
Psalm 4:6 NIV
Let the light of your face shine on us.
And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb.
Revelation 21:23 NASB
The Light of Christ is God’s gift for all people!
“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
Ephesians 2:8 NKJV
For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ, therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life.
Romans 5:17–18 NKJV
Light shines on the godly,
Psalm 97:11 NLT
and joy on those whose hearts are right.
What gift will you give to Christ?
What can we bring to the Lord?
Micah 6:6-8 NLT
What kind of offerings should we give him?
Should we bow before God
with offerings of yearling calves?
Should we offer him thousands of rams
and ten thousand rivers of olive oil?
Should we sacrifice our firstborn children
to pay for our sins?
No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good,
and this is what he requires of you:
to do what is right, to love mercy,
and to walk humbly with your God.
I’m sure He will be delighted with your gift when you “do what is right, to love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.”
We are to shine Christ’s light in our lives.
Light shines in the darkness for the godly.
Psalm 112:4 NLT
They are generous, compassionate, and righteous.
The light of the righteous shines brightly,
Proverbs 13:9 NIV
but the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out.
But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn,
Proverbs 4:18 ESV
which shines brighter and brighter until full day.
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
Matthew 5:14–16 ESV
Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.
Philippians 2:14–16 ESV
Christ is the relevant light that shines at Christmas, but we should allow His light to shine brightly in our lives every day!
